One Glasgow Theatrethat has remained virtually unchanged since being opened over a hundred years ago is the Pavilion. Much of the original décor still exists, albeit in an upgraded fashion, and its Louis XV style is still loved and much admired today. The imposing terra cotta façade opens up to reveal a beautiful domed ceiling which originally held an electrically controlled sliding roof for ventilation which has now, rather sadly given way to more modern techniques. The circle, balcony and box fronts are all awash with the finest Rococo plasterwork and the original marble mosaic floor can still be seen. The greens and golds convey an aura of opulence quite in contrast to the city landscape outside and makes a welcome escape from the pressures of modern urban living. Don’t let the traditional exterior and décor fool you though, because over the years the owners have kept the facilities upgraded to the highest specification with state of the are sound and lighting as well as a well stocked bar, comfortable lounges and even a deceptively spacious and modern backstage area. The Pavilion theatre is a venue that successfully combines the old with the new.
